The last two days have allowed the College to celebrate what a special community of students, staff and parents we have. Our athletics carnival was also blessed by glorious weather, allowing everyone to enjoy the days. Much work happens after hours and behind the scenes to make events like this so successful. While every staff member makes a big contribution, I would like to make special mention of:
Our Term 1 ends on Friday 9 April and next week years 9 to 12 have normal classes on Wednesday 7 April to Friday 9 April. I have emailed every parent and student a letter that I have received from the Department of State Growth and Merseylink showing the amended bus arrangements for next week. Due to Year 7 and 8 camp bookings, we were unable to change our Term Dates at such short notice. I am grateful for the willingness of the authorities to work with me to help provide access to buses.
Term 2 commences on Monday 26 April.
We have our Easter Liturgy shortly. The message of new life that Easter offers us is a message of hope and optimism, with the elements of selflessness and sacrifice that Jesus offered and endured being more about the depth of unconditional love that God has of us. In addition to the sacred part of our liturgy, I have it on good authority that we have a special visitor to the College, and I expect that the hunt for the gifts that this visitor will be responsible for will add an element of joy to our College.
May each of you be blessed this Easter and may God help sustain you and keep you safe and happy.

SBSC’s Intro to Nursing Students completed their first day of work experience this week at the Kentish Adult Activity Centre in Sheffield.
Following an orientation / induction by the Centre Manager which included ensuring all Covid-19 Protocols were followed, Lucy & Abbey served a beautiful morning tea. Some clients gave their permission for a ‘life story’ interview, which resulted in an extended 1:1 conversation with several of the clients. Centre staff shared their skills and knowledge with students throughout the day, with a particular focus on the provision for a safe working environment for all and meeting individual needs.
Both young ladies took a turn at calling their first game of bingo, while the other assisted clients with their number recognition. Ongoing safe food handling procedures and checks were explained in depth, which will prove invaluable in the coming weeks when we transition into the infection control and food services units.
We were warmly welcomed to the Centre by everyone. On reflection the students shared that they had made many observations throughout the day. They challenged themselves around gaining confidence with their communication and interpersonal skills. We presented the clients with a lovely jigsaw puzzle and challenged them to have it well underway when we visit again in late May.
They were congratulated by the Centre Manager who shared that they did an awesome job.
What's been happening at school this month?
At the beginning of the month, Constable Leesa Poulton, Police Youth Liaison for the NorthWest, met with students in Years 7 & 8 to introduce herself and speak about her role. She also spent lunchtime on the playground for any students who wished to speak with her.
The purpose of this visit was so that students get to know Leesa, and don't just see her when they are "in trouble". Leesa will return later in the year for the THINKUKNOW presentations that tackle sexting.
At our first "regular" school assembly, Claire from Headspace in Devonport joined us to share what headspace has to offer young people. She also returned at lunchtime that day to host a "pop up" stall on the playground for any students who wished to speak with her.
Last week, each year group attended a session of the Digital Thumbprint program. These were extremely engaging workshops and I encourage parents to look at their parent resources available online: https://www.digitalthumbprint.com.au/parent-resources/

2021 Rowing Report
This season has been one to remember for the SBSC rowing team. The group of seventeen rowers competed at three school regattas during March. There were many noteworthy performances at the Tasmanian School’s Championships regatta, especially in the Open, u16 and u15 School Girls events. Next was the SATIS Head of the River regatta. Some standout performances from the day include:
The highlight of the season was the School Girls Open Eights, with St Brendans entering an eight for the first time in the Head of the River. They came fifth in the firsts division - a fantastic effort considering the crew had very little preparation beforehand and was underage. The crew was composed of Sarah Ellis, Luka Mansell, Olivia Yeates, Sophie Grave, Jess Welch, Meg Castles, Ella Spaulding and Catherine Greenhill, with cox Matilda Spaulding. Adding to this success, SBSC managed to come home with the Senior Girls Aggregate Trophy, meaning they scored the most points in the girls u16 and open divisions. The success of the season wouldn’t have happened without our awesome coaches David and Merv Tippet and Graham Scattergood, from the Mersey and Kentish rowing clubs.
The final event of the rowing calendar is the Australian Rowing Championships which was held here in Tassie at Lake Barrington! This was a week-long regatta where many of our SBSC rowers were competing against the nation’s best, hoping for a podium finish. The regatta was a great opportunity for our young rowers to see Olympic level crews compete.
