I cannot put into words how moved I was after watching Chicago. The depth of attention that was given to this production allowed the cast to shine ... and shine they did? I know that when I look back over my years in this vocation, these bi annual productions will be at the forefront of my joyous recollections. My heart is forever grateful for the gifts that this (and all) productions have given me.
I thought parents would value some insight into what the implications of power loss at the College are. Our telephone communications can function normally for about 20 minutes before the Uninterpreted Power Supply (UPS) runs down, requiring the servers that operate it to be shut down in a staged manner to protect it from data loss and damage. At this stage, incoming calls are automatically re-routed to back-up mobile phones.
A separate UPS allows our internal Public Address system to function for an hour or so before it too shuts down. Finally, the main servers that hold all of our students' data, including critical health flags, can only operate for an hour before they. too need to be progressively shut down. Thus our capacity to discharge our duty-of-care is diminished, as is our capacity to implement various emergency plans.
While our solar system continues to generate power, this is fed into the grid and needs to be isolated to ensure that Tasnetworks staff are not placed at risk. The technology of battery storage is not yet sufficiently efficient for our purposes.
I want to acknowledge our IT support contractors, the Reflex Technology Group (RTG), and their onsite IT staff, Nathan Sharp and Stephen Wilson who have excellent plans in place when power loss occurs. They monitor the situation until supply resumes, and then undertake a lengthy process to 're-boot' all of our systems before we require them (from before 7:00am each day). I can also share that we have been investigating several options for keeping key servers operational. We have a plan but need to resolve how to extend wifi across the grounds for staff to use our student database.
Related to the data that we hold, the College has been working with RTG on a Digital Privacy Safety and Security (DPSS) project. We have conducted an audit of our Policies, Programs, Systems and our Incident Responses. We have also begun to look at implementing education programs in line with the audit findings. The following 'screen-grab' is of our 'dashboard summary'. The project is ongoing and we will regularly be re-evaluating our polices (and their implementation), programs, systems, and incident response plans.
Embrace life and I will keep you in my prayers.

St Brendan-Shaw College will be updating their website platform this coming Monday, 26th August. This project has had over 6 months of development and testing and we're very excited to provide our School Community with a responsive yet simple website with ease of navigation a priority. As such, the Newsletter format also changes - we hope you like it as much as we do.
Morning Notices for students and staff will also have a slightly updated "look'".
As with all changes, there may be some inital teething and we appreciate your patience. Any feedback is welcome - please email newsletter@sbsc.tas.edu.au.
Work Experience - Students in year 10, 11 & 12 are invited to complete work experience during the first week in School Holidays. Students can obtain a work experience form from Mrs Banfield and then are encouraged to source an employer. Once the workplace has agreed to have them on board, the forms are completed by the employer, parents and student and then returned to Mrs Banfield no later than Thursday 5th September. Once students have completed the required online safety modules relevant to their industry, the student is covered under the College insurance policy. Any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Banfield at the College.

NSATIS Soccer
With the Saints Men beginning the second half of their season they were looking to right some wrongs from the first 5 games and get into the winners circle. With two big games this week, the Saints men were up for the challenge.
On Monday 19th of August, the Saints men travelled to Launceston to take on Scotch Oakburn who defeated the Saints 1-0 in a close game in round one. The Saints started the game slowly and allowed Scotch to play freely in the middle of the park which left SBSC on the backfoot. Scotch were the first to strike and it was familiar territory for the Saints who again had a fight on there hands. The men responded quickly and were able to find the back of the net off of the boot of Joe Heatley. From here the Saints never looked back, controlling the game and giving little possession away. Jacob Woodcock and Kai Phillips had a solid day in defence which provided the Saints with more scoring opportunities and the teams Captain Daniel Hicks was able to finish off a great cross into the box, taking the game to 2-1 at the half. The Saints men would start the second half strong and Joe Heatley was again able to find the back of the net after a great through ball from Lachlan Ellis to put the Saints further in front. A lack of concentration after their goal however would provide opportunities for Scotch who were able to put away a cross to put the game at 3-2. With time running out the Saints men were looking to put the final nail in the coffin and would do so in style with Daniel Hicks making a great run through the middle to put his second goal of the game and season away. With a 4-2 lead and time running out the Saints controlled the remainder of the game, never giving Scotch another opportunity to score.
On Wednesday 21st of August in wet and windy conditions the Saints men took on Launceston Christian school who defeated the Saints 3-0 in their first encounter. The Saints men started the game the best they have all season. Playing a fast and physical brand of soccer the Saints controlled possession of the ball and moved the LCS players around the park. With plenty of opportunities to score the Saints men were patient while waiting to capitalize on some defensive errors from LCS. Late in the first half the Saints were gifted a free kick right in front of goal and Kai Phillips made easy work of his opportunity, slotting it past the LCS goalkeeper to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. The Saints would carry this lead into the second half but it wasn’t long before Caleb Rose was called for a foul inside the box and LCS were awarded a penalty which they put away with ease. The second half would turn into a tense encounter of back and forth with both teams searching for the goal to put them in front. With both goalkeepers busy in the trying conditions they did a great job to keep the ball out of the net. The Saints men stuck to their game plan and continued to move the ball wide and get behind the LCS defence providing scoring opportunities. Joe Heatley was instrumental on the left wing in the final stages of the game beating his defender and putting in a great cross to find the boot of Bryn Chrystie to give the Saints the lead. At 2-1 and with little time left on the clock LCS continued to pressure the Saints defence but the Saints men would not let up finishing the game 2-1.
NSATIS Netball
In NSATIS Netball, our 1st got the afternoon started in what was always going to be a tough encounter for the Lady Saints. The Lady Saints played a tough game and looked good in patches, however, it would not be enough for them to come home with a win and they went down 30-14.
In the 2nds game it was as much closer affair with the lead changing several times throughout the game. It was only in the final quarter did Scotch look to take control of the game and maintain their lead. With 5 minutes left on the clock scores were level at 22-22. Sctoch would then begin to put their foot down to move the ball quickly and limit the Lady Saints scoring opportunities. This would prove to be the difference as Scotch ran away with the game winning 31-28.
A massive thank you to all the girls who traveled on Monday with both teams missing several players for their games.
Wednesday’s game against Launceston Christian would prove to be an interesting game. The game got underway but it wasn’t long before Mother Nature had her say and the whole College losing power the game was not able to continue. The game was eventually called off and deemed a draw under NSATIS rules with no make up game possible.
NSATIS teams now turn their attention to next week where they again will play two games. The first game on Monday 26th of August against NW rivals Marist Regional College. Mens soccer starts at 3.15pm and girls 1st netball at 3.15pm and 2nds at 4.15pm.
On Wednesday the 28th of August the Saints will travel to Launceston to take on Launceston Grammar.
