Catholic Education Tasmania last year introduced a system-wide strategy targeted at an increased focus on improving literacy across all year levels and in all subjects for the students who attend Catholic schools.
The initial stage included every Catholic school identifying a literacy leader who would participate in Professional Learning with the other literacy leaders, bringing this back to the school. The project is evolving and becoming more ambitious, looking to incorporate high-impact teaching practices to improve educational achievement.
Catholic school leaders recently spent a day with Canberra Goulburn Catholic Education peers who have been on this journey for three years. They were very optimistic about its impact on their schools, and we were invited to learn more. Despite being my last year in this role, I believed that this was something I felt the College should explore further. I was thrilled that our School Leadership Team supported what we all recognised as what high-impact teachers already do instinctively.
Since then, we have been delving deeper into the science of learning that provides the foundations that underpin high-impact teaching and learning.
Friday night's Vinnies sleepout was a rewarding experience for the students who participated. While the experience is designed to build awareness and as an act of solidarity, we use the locked Nazareth Centre for security purposes - it is worth reflecting that this is a safeguard that those sleeping on the streets don't have.
I am writing this early due to the Public Holiday for the National Day of Mourning for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Stay safe, keep happy, and I will keep you in my prayers.

Yesterday and today, Year 9 students participated in their Reflection Days. We welcomed guest speakers Sam Clear from Walk4one Samuel Clear, Dannielle Miller who is a best-selling Author, Teen Educator Speaker & Media Commentator, Jake Snepvangers, and Jordan Carter from The Empowered Man.
Students listened to and engaged with the speakers over their personal experiences, spent time bonding with their cohort and learned something new about themselves and the world around them.
Last Friday night, Vinnie's Club and SRC members spent the night sleeping on cardboard boxes in aid of raising awareness for homelessness. The students welcomed visits from Gran's Van, who provided a meal for the students, and Vinnies, who discussed local homelessness. The students also spent the night putting together men's bags with items gathered from donations from students and their families.
On Monday, students interested in joining the Tasmania Police had the opportunity to attend a police recruiting information session presented by Senior Sergeant Rawlings. During the session, topics such as day-to-day general duties to the multiple areas Police Officers can specialise in were covered. Seeing so many students interested in knowing more about such a rewarding career path was great!
Earlier this week, Year 7 and 9 Students listened in on a presentation run by MIA Skin Cancer around sun danger and how and why we should be protecting our skin. A powerful presentation and timely reminder as we enter the warmer months.

Our students joined forces with Marist Regional College to take on Scotch Oakburn College in a Year 7 and 8 Catholic School Football competition. The Round 2 game today saw SBSC/MRC come away with a spectacular win.
Thank you to Scotch for hosting the first round and travelling down to Devonport today. It was wonderful to see the two teams having a blast on the field!
