Remembrance Day was recognised at the College as usual with a prayer and reflection ritual. I had the privilege of celebrating with TCEO Leaders and peer Principals at our regular leaders' meeting. One of our number had a great grandfather who won a VC in 1917, and another, a great grandfather who fought at the Somme. A real privilege.
A recent Parliamentary inquiry in Tasmania has found that almost half of adults do not have the basic skills needed to understand and use information from newspapers, magazines, books and brochures. 26TEN is a network of organisations and individuals working together to improve adult literacy and numeracy in Tasmania and I have added a link for anyone who wants more information, however, Catholic School Principals had a representative speak to us last month. They identify that shame is a key barrier that stops adults who struggle from seeking support. Catholic Education Tasmania has committed to improving literacy across all year levels and from 2022 every Catholic school will appoint a Literacy Practice Leader who will lead school-based professional learning of teachers and support their practice in literacy teaching and learning. In a secondary school that is delivering the Australian Curriculum, teaching literacy is the responsibility of every teacher, however, Initial Teacher Education does not provide the skills, so this is a great initiative. The College had already decided to increase the Learning Enhancement Department with the addition of Ms Kirsty Draper who joined us this week having just arrived from Queensland. Our own Mrs Ruth Timmins has also been recognised as the College's Literacy Practice Leader. We will further improve literacy support for all students as even those whose literacy is at standard or above achieve further gain by explicit literacy teaching.
May you stay safe, keep happy and join me in continuing to keep our seniors in your prayers.

Year 7 - 10 students stepped onto the pitch this week at the Cricket Gala Day at Meercroft and Byard Parks. Students played multiple games of cricket throughout the day against other local schools. Well done to all!
The nation has spoken! Our Ag-Science students have won this year's Cows Create Careers video competition hosted by MaxCare.
SBSC competed against 204 schools across Australia and over 11,000 students! Their white lab coats and cheerful cow masks along with their understanding of career options within the industry helped to gain 38% of the votes and come away with the $1,000 cash prize!
A huge congratulations to Tiki Lee, Jasmine Wilden, Emily Doran, Madeleine Simpson, and Madeline Brown for their win. And of course, to their teacher, Miss Elizabeth Temple for inspiring the students throughout the year!

What a successful weekend of basketball for the College! Eight teams were entered into the North West High School Basketball Championships, who all did a remarkable job playing and representing the College.
Well deserved Senior girls division two team took out runner's up in their Grand Final, and both Senior and Junior girls division one teams came away with the Grand Final win! Both teams are competing in next weekend's State Championships in Launceston.
Congratulations to all SBSC teams, as well as teams from surrounding schools for your efforts, and the coaches/managers along with Basketball Tasmania for making the weekend happen.
Thursday, 11 November, students in Sports for Girls ventured to the beach to catch some waves! While the weather was sunny and the water slightly better than freezing, the girls still had no hesitation to get straight in and on their boards! After wobbly starts, all the girls got the hang of it in the end!
The Year 12 Graduation Mass and Valedictory Dinner is on Wednesday, 24 November. Students should have received their invitation to the Dinner and a letter outlining expectations for the Mass. Attendees are asked to arrive at 5:40 pm for a prompt start time of 6 pm for Mass. Students should be dressed in neat dinnerwear while also wearing their College scarves.
