Principals Report 17/11/19
The topic of Leadership has been at the forefront of my mind over the last fortnight.
I have been heartened by the leadership of our outgoing College Captains and SRC Executive who have embodied the ideal of leadership as service to the community. This is an ideal demonstrated by our founders and in the person of Jesus himself. These young people are a group of students who have always prioritised relationships with all members of the community, making younger peers and staff feel known and valued.
Last week I was privileged to spend two days with our Year 9 students, facilitating our annual Year 9 Leadership Days, designed to build their leadership capacity as they progress into being the more senior members of the student body, and prepare them for potential formal leadership roles. We are currently in the very difficult process of selecting up to 40 Yr 10 Leaders from the 70 applicants, and hope to have these finalised early next week so that they can be presented to the community at next week’s school assembly.
We have also recently appointed students to the 2020 SRC Executive and I commend all of those students who put themselves forward for a role. I was most pleased to hear the story of one student who, once she had completed her speech, was rightly proud of the effort she had gone to to simply put herself out of her comfort zone.
Putting themselves forward for such positions requires what students might call putting themselves out there - and I admire each one of them for doing this. In Dare To Lead, Brené Brown puts it best when she says:
Daring is not saying “I’m willing to risk failure.”
Daring is saying “I know I will eventually fail, and I’m still all in.”
I am looking forward to seeing all of our 2020 student leaders flourish as they take on their duties.
